An acclaimed educator, English and comparative literature scholar, and author, Dr. Leroy F. Searle is a professor emeritus at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, with whom he has been affiliated since 1977, following an appointment at the University of Rochester in 1970. During his influential tenure at UW, Dr. Searle served as the founding director of the Humanities and Arts Computing Center, the director of the Walter Chapin Simpson Humanities Center and the College Studies Program, and a founding faculty member of such programs as the Comparative History of Ideas Program, the Criticism and Theory Program, and the Textual Studies Program. Likewise, Dr. Searle chaired UW’s intellectual property management advisory committee and served as the graduate program coordinator for comparative literature. His seminal works, including “Critical Theory since 1965” and “Critical Theory since Plato,” have been crucial in reshaping the study of literary criticism. More recently, Dr. Searle and his colleagues launched The Tautegory Project five years ago, an online community contributing to philosophical and critical thinking, having also founded the Society for Critical Exchange. Holding a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in English from the University of Iowa, Dr. Searle is presently authoring a book of new and collected essays.
Dr. Searle was honored with a feature on the Who’s Who of Top Educators website in 2024.
Notably, Dr. Searle was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who in 2024.
