Dr. James H. Philip is an award-winning Harvard professor of anesthesiology and senior consultant anesthesiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital with nearly five decades of expertise in his field. He holds both a Bachelor and Master of Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and began his career as a medical device designer for HP Medical. Frustrated by what he perceived as a mismatch between the medical devices providers wanted and what was available, he pursued a Doctor of Medicine degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University while continuing his design work. Dr. Philip completed an internship and residency in anesthesia with the goal of using his engineering background to improve care and is responsible for developing technology that decreased anesthesia mortality by 90%.
Dr. Philip’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom to include Med Man Simulations, a pioneer in developing educational procedural simulation software such as the widely adopted Gas Man® program. Looking toward the future, he plans to return to his design roots as a full-time consultant to medical device makers.
