Dr. William Douglas Bush Hiller is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, researcher, and pioneer in endurance sports medicine. For more than 40 years, he has maintained a clinical practice serving triathletes and performance athletes, building on his background in orthopedics and his passion for research innovation. He has served as medical staff for multiple Olympic and International Paralympic Games, the University of Hawaii’s women’s athletics, and World Triathlon, in addition to research consulting for IRONMAN Group since the 1980s and serving as co-director of the global triathlon safety database.
A multisport athlete himself, Dr. Hiller has won awards from USA Triathlon, is in the World Triathlon Hall of Fame, and played a key role in developing safety guidelines for endurance sports, including the first documentation of hyponatremia in triathletes. He holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from Thomas Jefferson University and has completed fellowships in surgery, sports medicine, and orthopedics, leading him to serve as director of the University of Hawaii’s orthopedic surgery residency foot and ankle program, among other appointments.
