For more than four decades, Barbara Chalk made a difference in the lives of thousands of patients as a medical and surgical nurse. Specializing in neurosurgery and patient care, she assisted doctors with surgeries centering on brain tumors, intracranial aneurysms, spinal work, etc. She earned a diploma in nursing from the House of Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, NY in 1957, and began working that same year in the hospital. After two years, Ms. Chalk became the head nurse in the neurosurgery operating room for the University of Virginia Hospital and remained in this position until 1975. From 1975, until her retirement in 2000, she provided her skills and expertise as a clinical coordinator of the neurosurgery operating room at the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Alongside her career as a nurse, Ms. Chalk served as a co-editor of “Core Curriculum for Operating Room Nurses-Neurosurgery” and was a contributor to articles and professional journals. For her philanthropic volunteer work, she has received a Certificate of Merit from the Parkinson’s Disease Association, Virginia. Though retired, Ms. Chalk is a passionate volunteer with Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital.
