Chi Yu Hu, PhD

Professor Emeritus | California State University, Long Beach

After leading a career marked by passion and dedication for more than five decades, Dr. Chi Yu Hu is currently a professor emeritus at the California State University, Long Beach. Driven by her curiosity for physics, she was inspired by her students, many of whom earned their master’s degrees and went on to careers in the field. In her academic pursuits, Dr. Hu earned a Bachelor of Science from the National Taiwan University in 1955 and continued to receive a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. Upon graduating, she served as a research associate at St. John’s University before joining the faculty at California State University, Long Beach as an assistant professor. She later became an associate professor, and a full professor in 1972, until her retirement in 2006. Dr. Hu is known for being the first to replace the traditional one wave function approach for multichannel systems with multichannel theory. In the three-body system, these calculations provide accurate wave functions for each independent state in the system. New universal physical mechanisms were uncovered that have multidisciplinary applications. Extending such calculations may uncover more universal physical mechanisms. Dr. Hu encourages research to improve our understanding of nature.
