Dr. Douglas C. Munski, a professor in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science at the University of North Dakota, has enjoyed a career lasting over 45 years. Joining the academic institution in 1978, he concurrently thrived as department chair from 1999 to 2001 and from 2020 to 2023. In his role, he maintains responsibility for educating undergraduate students on general education courses in geography, including human, regional, North American and world geography at the 100 and 200 levels, plus selected 300 and 400-level specialized courses and graduate classes. Impressively, he ascended from a non-tenured visiting assistant professorship to a tenured associate professorship until being escalated to a full professorship. Accepting numerous campus accolades since the inception of his career, the latest is the 2021 Outstanding Course Development Award from the University of North Dakota. He is a life member of the National Council for Geographic Education, receiving its national Distinguished Teaching Award, and an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, having received a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Arts in geography, and a PhD in geography and urban planning. He is a commissioner of the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission.
