Elizabeth Alexander, the sole practitioner of the Law Offices of Elizabeth Alexander in Washington, D.C., is a staunch defender of prisoner rights. Serving extensively with the National Prison Project of the American Civil Liberties Union between 1981 and 2009, she worked in various public interest offices in her career’s infancy before cementing her legacy as a civic advocate. Since opening her law office in 2009, Ms. Alexander has continued litigation on behalf of prisoner rights, with many of her cases involving prisoner class actions. In this regard, she has argued three cases before the United States Supreme Court, two of which led the Supreme Court to advance a standard for demonstrating which actions, or lack thereof, violate the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Adjacent to her efforts with litigation, Ms. Alexander has lectured before the public on the harmful effects of unnecessarily long prison sentences, noting the counterproductive results of such sentences on prisoners and society. She has also taught at law schools nationwide and spoken on the problems of the current criminal justice system. Ms. Alexander earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Yale Law School in 1971 and was among the winners of the 2022 Justice Potter Stewart Award.
Ms. Alexander and her legal career were the subjects of a comprehensive video by Marquis Who’s Who.
In 2021, Ms. Alexander was bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who, recognizing her leadership in the field of law.
