Dr. Floyd W. McCoy is a distinguished educator who retired at the rank of professor emeritus at the University of Hawaii-Windward in 2023. Formerly teaching at the university as a professor of geology, geophysics and oceanography beginning in 1990, he specialized in marine geology, volcanology and geo-archaeology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Notably, Dr. McCoy has lectured and conducted research worldwide, traveling overseas to conduct geological and geophysical surveys of late Bronze Age deposits in Greece on Santorini and Crete and develop oceanographic programs in Italy and Israel. Likewise, he has served as a senior research scientist with the Associated Scientists at Woods Hole since 1986 and previously served as the curator and director of the Core Laboratory at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University between 1974 and 1986. Earning the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of Hawaii in 2021, Dr. McCoy attributes much of his success to his passion for the field. He holds a Bachelor of Science in geology and a Master of Science in volcanology from the University of Hawaii and a Doctor of Philosophy in geological sciences from Harvard University. He is also a United States Navy veteran.
