Gerald J. Pels is an environmental partner at Troutman Pepper Locke, where his practice has focused on environmental regulatory compliance and risk management since 2009. Mr. Pels works with C-suite executives to navigate challenges including environmental investigations, defense and negotiation in cases related to EPA, state, and civil actions. He has been a leader in environmental law for more than four decades and has argued cases including the landmark Cooper v. Aviall case and Clean Air Act issues before the Texas 5th Circuit Court in litigation involving the Texas State Implementation Plan.
Mr. Pels holds a JD from Vanderbilt University and began his career as an associate of Liddell Sapp LLP in 1983, departing to join Troutman Pepper Locke in 1990. After three years as a partner at Sutherland, he returned to Troutman Pepper Locke, cementing his reputation as a keystone of the Texas legal community. As a part of his commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders in his field, Mr. Pels is an in-demand speaker, writer, and panelist and the sponsor of a law scholarship at Vanderbilt University.
