Dr. Gordon D. McLaren is a professor emeritus of hematology and oncology at UCI Health, where he spent nearly 25 years as active faculty. Dr. McLaren is best-known for his contributions to hematology, and he has dedicated much of his career to research on areas including disorders of iron metabolism, hemochromatosis, and regulation of iron-binding cellular proteins. He is a distinguished member of the American Society of Hematology and served as chair of the Committee on Iron and Heme in addition to publishing and speaking extensively. In addition to his seminal research practice, Dr. McLaren is a board-certified hematologist and internist who maintained a clinical practice with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs until his retirement from the bureau in 2018.
Dr. McLaren accepted professor emeritus status in 2021, capping a career that included faculty posts at Case Western Reserve University and the University of North Dakota in addition to UCI Health. Reflecting on his career, he is proud to have combined his passion for chemistry and medicine to have a lasting impact on both his specialty and the patients that he serves.
