Dr. Imogene Mathison Mixson, a retired academic dean and educator, accrued nearly four decades of professional excellence prior to her retirement. Joining Wallace State Community College in 1982, she served as an English instructor and academic dean until retiring in 1996. Earlier, she thrived as an English instructor and English department chair at Enterprise State Community College and as an English teacher at Dothan High School in Alabama. Receiving numerous accolades, including recognition as a Distinguished Educator by Florida State University in 2016, she was named Teacher of the Year by Enterprise State Community College in 1973, 1977 and 1980 and earned the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Alabama Community College System in 1991. Impressively, Wallace State Community College named the Dr. Imogene Mathison Mixson Writing Center in her honor in 2021, and the Dean’s Office in the College of Education at Auburn University will be renamed the Imogene Mixson Executive Office in the spring of 2025. The young adult section of the Ozark Dale County Library was also named in her honor in 2023. Dr. Mixson holds a Bachelor of Science from Troy University, a Master of Science from Auburn University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University.
