James VanAllen Bickford III is a real estate developer, entrepreneur, and city planner who has excelled with his company, Midlantic Builders LLC, since 1970. A certified property manager in two states, Mr. Bickford holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and a Master’s degree in city planning from the University of North Carolina. He has developed residential communities in Virginia and North Carolina and managed commercial properties including shopping centers and large land tracts, and specializes in redevelopment of distressed properties. Prior to entering the real estate industry, Mr. Bickford served as an engineer for the United States Army and worked at NASA Langley as a contributor to the NASA Project Mercury program. Mr. Bickford has been married for more than 60 years and is the parent of four adult sons, and remains active in his church and community with contributions to programs supporting homeless residents. Outside his work in real estate, Mr. Bickford enjoys painting and culinary arts, sits on the board of directors of the American Society of Marine Artists and holds leadership posts in the Association of Homebuilders and the Diocese of Southern Virginia, among other organizations.
