James J. Sherin – a preeminent name in education, information technology and mathematics – amassed more than four decades of professional excellence prior to his retirement in 2003. Before concluding his career efforts, he served as a UNIX systems administrator at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health Systems, joining the institution in 1997. Among his myriad of responsibilities, Mr. Sherin worked on over 40 SUN and IBM UNIX platforms. Since retiring, he has served as a part-time instructor at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, sharing his wealth of knowledge with students in the computer sector. Prior roles to his credit have also included serving as a systems administrator at Thrift Drug Inc.; a systems programmer, user consultant, manager and project leader at Westinghouse Electric Corporation; a pre-sales analyst at Cray Research Inc.; and an on-site analyst at Control Data Corporation. Likewise, he served in academia at the Rochester Area School District, teaching mathematics and drafting, and was a journeyman programmer for the United States Steel Corporation. Mr. Sherin holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Geneva College and worked toward a master’s degree at Duquesne University. He allocated time to the Boy Scouts of America as a volunteer scoutmaster.
