Jan Buch’s work in academia and within the medical research industry and resulted in a number of achievements and developments. One of the most notable highlights of his career was the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT) Study. The Pfizer-sponsored study compared 19,000 European patients with antihypertensive therapies with older medications, and evaluated the use of the lipid-lowerer, Lipitor (co-developed by Warner-Lambert/Parke-Davis and Pfizer), in the prevention of heart attacks and stroke. Dr. Buch had received an MD from Copenhagen University in 1969 and spent the early years of his career at Rigshospitalet, the main Copenhagen University hospital, treating cardiology patients. Following this, he joined other Copenhagen University hospitals. From 1987 to 1992, he served Pfizer Denmark as a medical director. From 1992 to 2009, he provided his skills and expertise as a senior medical director and global team leader in the Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Endocrine, Obesity team with Pfizer in New York. After retiring he served as a consultant until 2015.
