Dr. Joan A. Muir, a clinical psychologist for 25 years, has served as the executive director of the Brief Strategic Family Therapy Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 2007. Developed to aid children struggling with substance use or delinquency, the institute is a family model system where Dr. Muir creates dissemination plans to distribute to international communities. Notably, in her first year as executive director, she secured a contract with the City of Stockholm to implement the program at a youth addiction facility. Earlier in her career, Dr. Muir was an assistant research professor at the University of Miami between 1998 and 2004. She draws upon a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy, both in clinical psychology, from Fordham University. Additionally, she was a pre-doctoral fellow at the Yale University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1993 and a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute from 1994 to 1995. Dr. Muir has spoken on the topic of mental health in youth and families across the globe and is a past president of the South Florida chapter of the American Psychological Association. Looking ahead, she aims to ease into a well-deserved retirement.
