A retired mathematics professor, well-regarded scholar and United States Marine Corps veteran, Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez retired in 2012 after accruing more than 40 years of professional excellence. Formerly serving as a Regents’ Professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM), he taught students within the College of Education beginning in 1986. Previously, he was a mathematics instructor at UNM-Valencia, a professor and department of mathematics chairperson at the University of Albuquerque, and an instructor at the National College-Albuquerque Extension. Throughout his career, he has conveyed the principles of mathematics in ways that students could grasp intuitively. Possessing several academic credentials, he holds a Doctor of Philosophy from UNM, his dissertation having been nominated for the prestigious Popejoy Dissertation Prize in 1980. Likewise, Dr. Martinez has authored and/or co-authored numerous books related to mathematics and easing mathematics-related anxiety in children, served as a partner of “The Narrow Way” series, and is a past editorial board member of the Journal of College Reading and Learning. Humbly accepting a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1998, Dr. Martinez has been profiled in Forbes, Fortune, Wired and The New Yorker magazines.
