Joy A. Gottshall is a school psychologist for Guilford County Schools, where she has dedicated nearly 45 years to serving students and the community. She works closely with teachers, curriculum facilitators, and other staff to provide high-quality services including staff development, testing and assessments, and student intervention in addition to supervising the district’s unique preservice school psychologist internship program. Ms. Gottshall began her professional journey at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, earning a Bachelor’s degree in psychology. She would later return to the campus as a student of its then-pilot school psychology program, completing a Master of Arts in 1978.
Prior to joining Guilford County Schools, Ms. Gottshall found success as a school psychologist for Caswell County Schools and Person County School District. Throughout her career, she has been a fierce advocate for her profession, holding leadership positions in the North Carolina School Psychology Association, and she considers her policy advocacy and contributions to North Carolina school psychologist pay classification to be among her proudest professional accomplishments. Ms. Gottshall looks forward to continuing her work with the goal of reaching 50 years of service.
Ms. Gottshall was presented with the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her career dedication to excellence.
On February 11, 2026, Ms. Gottshall appeared in the Wall Street Journal among a group of her Marquis listee peers. A national press release announced her feature.
