For more than 65 years, Lois Whealey has worked as an educator and citizen activist dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental justice projects. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Stanford University and a Master of Education from the University of Michigan. She began teaching fifth grade at the Owyhee Combined School in 1952 and continued teaching K-8 across Michigan and Kentucky in addition to a one-year stint in Oxford, England as an adult basic education instructor for the United States Air Force. In 1975, Ms. Whealey completed a Master of Arts in political science at The Ohio State University, where she taught part-time, and focused on activism, working as an administrative assistant for the Ohio University Humanities Conference and with the Athens County Regional Planning Association, the International Women’s Year, and the League of Women Voters. She was elected President of the Athens City School District Board of Education in 1985, and continued to pursue leadership roles with the Ohio Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Ohio Women Inc., and the Ohio Alliance for the Environment. In 2007, Ms. Whealey returned to The Ohio State University and completed a Master of Science in social science.
