Louise Fay Despres

Louise Fay Despres is a retired world languages teacher who dedicated more than four decades to sharing her passion for French language and culture. She began learning French from her mother, and later studied music in France at the Fontainebleau Schools under organist and composer Nadia Boulanger. Ms. Despres holds a Bachelor of Arts in French from Connecticut College, a Master of Arts in education from Brown University, and a second Master of Arts in French in 1973 from Middlebury College. Ms. Despres began teaching in 1967 at North Haven High School in Connecticut. She joined the faculty at New Canaan High School in 1970, where she taught Spanish and French classes, and served as chair of the World Languages Department until her 2012 retirement. Ms. Despres’ teaching philosophy focused on culture as a key to language learning, and she is proud to have taught several students who later worked overseas or pursued advanced study in French language and literature. She contributed to curriculum development and review throughout her career, and was the recipient of awards from the New England College Board, the Connecticut Council of Language Teachers, and a study grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
