Marilynn J. Smiley

Teaching Professor Emerita | State University of New York at Oswego

Leveraging over 50 years of professional experience, Dr. Marilynn Smiley served with the State University of New York at Oswego as a faculty member in the music department beginning in 1961. She was appointed as a distinguished teaching professor in 1974 and attained teaching professor emerita status in 2014. Concurrently, she served as the chairperson of the music department from 1976 to 1981. Before joining SUNY Oswego, she was a public school music teacher in Logansport, Indiana, for seven years. During her tenure, Dr. Smiley was well-regarded for her expertise in ancient Greek music history and literature, as well as music from the Baroque and Renaissance periods, the classical works of Beethoven, American music history, medieval music and women in music. Possessing an abiding passion for music from a formative age, Dr. Smiley earned a Bachelor of Science from Ball State University, a Master of Music in musicology from Northwestern University, a certification from Ecoles d’Art Americaines in Fontainebleau, France, and a Doctor of Philosophy in musicology from the University of Illinois. She is the president of the Oswego branch of the American Association of University Women and the president of the board of directors of the Oswego Opera Theater.
