Mattielyn B. Williams

Administrative Judge (Retired) | Tennessee Department of State Administrative Procedures Division

Mattielyn B. Williams is an administrative judge for the Tennessee Department of State Administrative Procedures Division, where she served proudly from 1996 until her retirement in 2022. She holds a Juris Doctor from Vanderbilt University Law School and had initially hoped to concurrently pursue a Master of Divinity, but pivoted from ministry to focus her career on law and human services. Ms. Williams began her career as the director of legal and educational services at the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, and she retains her passion for ensuring equitable access to education at all levels.

Ms. Williams is proud to be the first African American woman to serve as an administrative judge in Tennessee and considers her work in the role her most significant career accomplishment. She is an active volunteer and leader for organizations such as the New Haven Shelter for Battered Women, the Tennessee Women’s Political Caucus, and the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.

Ms. Williams was featured in the Wall Street Journal among a select group of 2025 Marquis Distinguished Leaders. A national press release announced her appearance.

Who's Who of Professional Women

In recognition of her pioneering work as the first African American woman to serve the state of Tennessee as an administrative judge, Ms. Williams was included in Marquis Who’s Who of Professional Women.
