Dr. Block is the chair of BASIS Educational Ventures and an emeritus professor of economics and law at the University of Arizona, where he was active faculty from 1982 until 2006. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from Stanford University. He launched his career as a research analyst for Bank of America and Planning Associates of San Francisco and became an associate professor of economics at the University of Santa Clara in 1969. Throughout his career, he has been faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School, a fellow of the Hoover Institution, and served as director of the Center for Econometric Studies of Justice System, president of the Goldwater Institute for Public Policy, and a senior policy advisor to Arizona governor Fife Symington. Dr. Block is the former executive vice president of Cybernomics and a founding member of the United States Sentencing Commission, work he considers a career highlight. Since the late 1990s, Dr. Block has been active in charter school administration as the founder of BASIS Independence School and BASIS Educational Ventures, with schools in four states dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of academic integrity.
