Now retired, Michael J. Walzer accrued more than three decades of excellence in education at Akron Public Schools in Ohio, serving as a mathematics, science and history teacher for fifth through ninth grade. During his tenure, Mr. Walzer was exceptionally proud to have played a crucial role in shaping his students’ educational journeys, leaving a pronounced impact on students both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to his teaching role, he coached soccer in the fall and track in the spring, as well as organized ping-pong tournaments in the winter months. To wit, Mr. Walzer emphasized the significance of collaboration, noting that athletics and extracurricular activities positively complemented his students’ educational enrichment. Although he retired in 2006, he served as a part-time substitute teacher at four public school districts and several private schools across Summit County, Ohio, for over 10 years following his retirement. Adjacent to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Walzer is active with the Akron Hiking Club and has volunteered at The Mustill Store and Museum since 2012. A recognized writer as well, he published three poems through Eber & Wein Publishers, including “Staking a Claim” in 2014, “The Many Colors of Vinny Vango” in 2017 and “Hula Hoopla” in 2022.
