Myrna Fischman is an independent Certified Public Accountant and Professor Emerita of finance, law, accounting, and taxation at Long Island University. Granted Emerita status in 2019 after more than 40 years with the school, Dr. Fischman joined the faculty in 1970, and was named Director of the University’s School of Professional Accountancy in 1984. She considers her students’ success to be her legacy and implemented sweeping curriculum changes during her time, developing a 150-hour Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in accounting program, introducing credit articulation agreements with several area community colleges, and emphasizing continuing professional education options. As a practicing accountant, Dr. Fischman recognized the importance of real-world experience in career preparation, and under her guidance, 79 percent of LIU’s accounting courses were taught by faculty licensed as CPAs or attorneys, including a pioneering fraud curriculum developed by members of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Bernard Baruch College, and was awarded her Doctor of Philosophy by New York University in 1976.
