Dr. Newell is a geologist, consultant, and mining executive with nearly five decades of expertise in the mining industry with a focus on gold and copper extraction. He realized his passion for geology as a middle school student, and completed degrees at the University of Oregon and Colorado School of Mines before earning his Doctor of Philosophy in applied earth sciences from Stanford University in 1975. He began his career as a geologist with Kennecott Exploration before joining Newmont Exploration from 1977 until 1989, a period he considers a highlight. Dr. Newell went on to work with Gold Fields Mining Co. as a regional manager before serving as vice president of development for both Western Exploration and Capital Gold, Inc. Between 2009 and 2015, he was the president and CEO of Lake Victoria Mining Co., and he spent four years as director of Midway Gold, Inc, before transitioning to independent consulting. Dr. Newell helped develop the El Chanate Gold Mine and consulted on the Mexican Hat site, among other projects. He is a fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of America, and sits on the board of directors of the National Mining Hall of Fame Museum.
