Dr. Davis is a retired research oceanographer and educator whose career spanned more than 35 years of research and academic work. His work included the development of autonomous profiling floats and the creation of international programs collecting and analyzing data collected with the devices, in addition to current meter and underwater glider equipment for collecting oceanographic data. He has contributed to more than 110 published articles, holds several patents in his field, and has advised 11 successful doctoral candidates over the course of his career. Dr. Davis holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of California Berkeley and earned his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in chemical engineering at Stanford University. He became disillusioned with his career options as a graduate student and pivoted to oceanographic study. Dr. Davis began his career with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1967 as an assistant research geophysicist and remained at Scripps in various capacities until his retirement in 2000. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the National Academy of Science and has been the recipient of numerous honors, including the Henry Stommel Medal, the Maurice Ewing Medal, and the Prince Albert I Gold Medal.
Dr. Davis was honored with the Marquis Humanitarian Award for his career contributions.
