Sara Ann Young, RN, BSN, MSN

OB/GYN Clinical Nurse Specialist/IBCLC

For 33 years, Ms. Young was a clinical obstetrics-gynecology nurse specialist whose work focused on promoting and supporting the welfare of newborns and new mothers. Inspired by her mother, also a nurse, Ms. Young earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at West Virginia University and completed her Master of Science in Nursing at the Catholic University of America in 1977. She began her career in 1970 as a staff nurse at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital and was named the hospital’s head labor and delivery nurse in 1972. Ms. Young spent several years at George Washington University Hospital before joining the Hartford Hospital in 1978. She remained at Hartford Hospital until her retirement in 2011. A board-certified lactation consultant and certified bereavement counselor, Ms. Young helped create the hospital’s lactation center and encourage interdepartmental collaboration to better support new mothers’ emotional, social, and physical needs. In 2000, the Hartford Hospital was designated the first Baby-Friendly Hospital in the state of Connecticut, a distinction that Ms. Young considers a career highlight, and Ms. Young has been the recipient of awards from La Leche League and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses.
