Dr. Steven M. Stanley, an internationally acclaimed paleontologist and writer, is a research professor at Florida State University and a research associate at The Smithsonian Institution. The author of the 2024 book “T. Rex, Darwin, and Adventures Out West,” Dr. Stanley illustrates the explorations of a group of college students and a professor with mysterious intrigue and snippets of scientific facts. Penning numerous other books, such as “Children of the Ice Age,” “Principles of Paleontology” and “The New Evolutionary Timetable,” which was nominated for an American Book Award, he is well-regarded for garnering over 60 years of experience in paleontology, with key contributions including his theory of punctuated equilibria and his study of reef builders and producers of lime sediment. Previously teaching at the University of Hawaii at Manoa for 14 years and at Johns Hopkins University for 36 years, where he also chaired for 11 years the university’s part-time evening master’s degree program in environmental earth science and policy, Dr. Stanley is the only paleontologist to receive the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America in the last 30 years. He also earned the Mark Clark Thompson Medal from the National Academy of Sciences and the Twenhofel Medal from the Society for Sedimentary Geology.
